The Coalfields Regeneration Trust
keeps music alive in the centre of Warrington.
The free Saturday lunchtime recitals at Holy Trinity Church at Market Gate had a bleak future. The piano being used (converted from an old Pianola) was on its last legs and things were looking grim until the Coalfields Regeneration Trust (CRT) stepped in with a grant of £9500 towards the cost of a new grand piano.
Norman Cutter (chairman of WACIDOM) said “WACIDOM has been organising these recitals for over 8 years now and recently it became apparent that they were very much in the balance until we received the grant. We can now plan for the future with every confidence.”
The Vicar of Holy Trinity, the Revd Steve Parish, said he was delighted with the news. “The free lunchtime concerts right at the heart of the town make a great chance to hear some talented young artists,” said Mr Parish, “and we’re very pleased that Holy Trinity can host them”.
Stephen Hough, the world renowned pianist (www.stephenhough.com) who is a patron of WACIDOM, said “What marvellous news that CRT has so generously given the money to make a new piano available in Warrington. A good piano means good piano concerts, and such confidence in our young musicians is encouraging indeed.”
The recitals give opportunities to young musicians – mainly from the Royal Northern College of Music to perform in public. Kamilla Arku who recently earned her Master’s Degree in Piano Performance there felt that the new piano would be a boon to both the pianist and the audience and will show off the excellent acoustic in the Church. Peter Wilson (Secretary of WACIDOM) said that the recitals enabled shoppers, music lovers and the curious to hear classical music played by top class young musicians without having to pay high ticket prices. They also created a relaxing break for shoppers.
An inaugural concert will be held at Holy Trinity Church on Saturday 25th April at 12.30pm when Culcheth born James Willshire, who is now regarded as one of the country’s outstanding young artists, will give the opening recital. This will be followed by recitals on the following four Saturdays.
Leon McCawley, (www.leonmccawley.com) who is also a patron of WACIDOM said “I would like to personally thank CRT for their very generous donation to WACIDOM for providing the necessary funds to purchase a grand piano for the Holy Trinity Church concerts in Warrington. This is wonderful and heartening news particularly considering the current financial climate. It is especially pleasing for me, as a Warrington-born pianist, to see that classical music in this area is getting the necessary support that it fully deserves so that locals can enjoy and appreciate the fine young talent that the North West has to offer.”
